Timing Chain

Hey folks, a question about replacing a timing chain
on a 1986 900 8v, non-turbo. My official Saab dealer
tells me the engine has to be removed and the gearbox
as well to do this job, which will cost me nearly 800
Euros (I live in Germany). My idependent Saab mechanic
thinks he can replace the timing chain without taking
the car all apart, which will cost only about 150 or
so.
Now my question is: Is it absolutely necessary to
replace the cogwheels etc as well when replacing the
timing chain? The car has 240.000 km on the clock and
you can hear it rattle when itīs cold. What will
happen when I keep on driving with this loose timing
chain? Lower mpg? Possible damage on the engine?
