>The nice AA man came to look at it, and found that a bolt had almost
unscrewed itself in the linkages that you can see just before it enters the
gearbox. <

I had a similar problem on my '86 900S.
The tranny was balky, and I could barely get it into gear.
I took it to my mechanic, and.....
He told me my transmission was fine.
It was the shifter that was shot.
He showed me how he could shift in to reverse without bothering to pull up
on the shift collar.
After 250K miles, I guess you have to expect these things
A liitle wear and tear.

Anyways, my mechanic recommended me to a AAMCO transmission shop nearby.
Now, AAMCO has a bad reputation.
But, my mechanic told me that the guy who owns it >OWNS< it. Not a franchise.

He did good by me.

'Course' I've never been happy with the linkage on the tranny in the first
place.
