The 99 Turbo 4-speed was quite a bit more 'long-legged' in the gear ratios.
The dsifference is a matter of RPMs vs road speed, not a difference in the
physical strength of the internals, which look about the same. The taller
ratios mean that at, say, 60mph in top (4th) gear the engine might be
turning only 3000 rpm instad of 3200 (numbers made up, to illustrate the
point only).

The result was a four-speed gearbox that didn't really need a fifth gear -
Booming along in fourth left the engine well within the power band, and you
could put the hammer down at any speed and get a great burst of
acceleration. The four-speed might be worth fixing if only to recapture the
original experience.

But is it fixable ? The four-speed had the same ring gear and pinion
gear/mainshaft I THINK - the differences were in the cluster gear and the
primary chain & sprockets. I would have to look all this up to be sure. If
what's broken is the pinion bearing housing the whole thing might be
fixable. If the cluster gear is gone you've got a parts problem.

The five-speed option is do-able. I put a five-speed in a 76 99 non-turb
and the reults were very pleasing. A 900 five-speed in a 99 turbo might be
awesome. You would have to modify a 99 primary chain cover (extend it
downward) to close up the chainbox on the five speed and make it match your
front mount. You will also have to change over the shift console & linkage.
Find a five-speed from late 86 or later that has what we call 'internal
centering' of the selector mechanism to make the whole shift linkage thing
easier.

If you want to pursue this you can e-mail me at guineybno39sdcx6spamx782world.std.com.
Contact me soon though, because that e-address is about to change and I
don't know to what.

Good luck - Bart Guiney, Cape Cod, USA
