Well, there are a couple of other tricky things about the
differential/pinion/final-drive assembly. Namely, measuring the pinion
depth and crown gear backlash with a suitable dial gauge setup (and special
jig), and shimming the pinion bearing and inner drivers properly into
place.

Pinion bearing replacement and re-assembly with correct preload are
probably the trickiest to do right, and require a variety of press tools, a
tapered-roller-bearing puller, and of course, a press.

The best investment is to spend $20+ on the SAAB service manual section
that covers the transmission in question before taking it apart.

Sending out the pinion bearing assembly to a trustworthy and experienced
professional for bearing replacement is an excellent idea.

Best of luck,

David Prantl
