Tires

I recently changed tires on our 1990 900 SPG and found out some interesting
things. I had 195/60HR15 BFGoodrich Touring TAs on my 1989 900 (now
defunct) with 6' wide aftermarket alloys. They were fine.

When the '89 blew up, I transferred the wheels and tires to the SPG. But
on the SPG, they rubbed the suspension occasionally with a full load.

When it came time to replace them, I discovered why: A side by side
comparison with Michelin Energy MXV4s (an OEM tire for some newer Saabs),
the BFG 195/60-15s were approximately 3/8' wider at the widest point on the
sidewall. We then compared the 185/65/15 BFGs to the Michelins 195/60s and
found that they were nearly the same width. The BFG 185/65s were wider
than the Michelin 185/65s. We decided to go with the BFGs in185/65-15
size (H rated) because of low cost and previous good experience with this
tire. The 185/65s don't rub, and spread out nicely on the 6' rims, so that
they likely give as wide a footprint as the Michelin 195/60s on the stock
rims. The BFG 195/60s would probably be OK on the stock 5 1/2' rims, but
we didn't try it since we have only 3 good ones left.

Tires with the same designator are supposed to be the same size.
Obviously, there are variations between brands, and probably between types
within brands.
