Just a darn minute!!!! You are asking if $600 is reasonable to replace the
timing chain which is being replaced because to fix the oil leak, you need
to pull the engine??? Seems you are putting the cart insde the horse!

*IF* the timing chain and tensioner need replacing, both can be done quite
easily from up top, the chain with the Saab 'roll-em-in' tool. But that
doesn't address the sprockets, which may well also need changing if the
chain needs changing. It seems to me that the timing cover can be sealed
in place, but that's not real easy either. The real question is what
*needs* to be repaired, and at what cost. A minor oil leak that requires
pulling the engine to repair, which isn't bothering anything but your
pride, on a 12 year old SPG, might just as well wait for the tranny to go.
But if the timing chain and sprockets need changing, then by all means fix
the oil leak.

And as for the question, $600 *is* a fairly reasonable fee to pull the
motor and change the chain.
