I don't know about a permanent fix, however the way to get your door open
without ruining your door handle is to bring out so hot water with you...
dump it over the frozen spot, and the hot water will melt the ice for long
enough for you to open it. I broke the door handle on a Ford many years ago
ripping it open when it was frozen.
