Front Axle Assembly

Anyone know what keeps the axle assembly firmly attached to the transmission
on a 91 9000CD Turbo? Also anyone have an exploded view of the assembly
where it attaches to the transmission? I have a Haynes manual, which has
nothing about R&R the front axles. I have a new assembly to install. The
reason for a new assembly is that my Wife was driving down the street and
she heard a large POP and then had no steering control. Thankfully she was
only going 25mph or so. After having it towed home I see that the axle has
separated from the transmission. I plan to install the axle assembly
sometime this weekend. Thanks in advance.
Ron
