Throwout Bearing Noise

Greetings!  I've got a '90 900S.  82K miles on the car.  Within the last
year, it's developed a sort of squealing noise.  A very high-pitching
mechanical squeaking that can be quite loud.  Usually happens in a specific
RPM range, 1000-2000 I'd say, though that's somewhat variable.

I have narrowed the area of the noise down to the front of the engine, at
the clutch.  In addition, the noise only occurs when the clutch is fully
engaged.  If I press even slightly on the clutch pedal, it goes away.

My amateur diagnosis is that this is a sign of a throwout bearing that's
wearing out.

Do I have a clue?  If not, any other opinions as to what it might be?

Either way, what's the prognosis?  Obviously, if it's the throwout bearing,
I should expect to replace the part eventually, along with replacing other
wear items up front (clutch disk, specifically...I can't think of any
others off the top of my head).  But how long can I continue with this
noise? (ignoring for the moment that it really gets on my nerves :) )  Will
it fail gradually, getting louder and louder, and more and more constant
(right now, it's fairly intermittent) or is my clutch just going to
disintegrate one day, leaving me stranded and with a huge repair bill?
