You should pull the chain tensioner and measure the extension.  If it is
more than 11 mm, then it's time for a new chain.

FWIW, Chris, I had a similar noise with my 87 900S.  I was convinced I was
going to lose the chain any minute.  Then while replacing my fan belts, I
noticed the water pump pulley was VERY loose!  The water pump was completely
shot, and the pulley rattling around was just where I would expect a bad
chain noise to be.  A new water pump fixed me right up.  

Once you remove the tension from the belts, you should be able to reach in
there and wiggle it to see if it's tight.
