Re: 900 or 9000

I have both a 'classic' 900 ('88 'S) and a NG900 ('97 Turbo). The NG 900
offers much better shoulder room and has more creature comfort in general.
However it has less leg room in the back seats and when these seats are
folded it does not have the same cargo capacity as the OG 900. I find that
though the my newer 900 is quicker, the older seems more fun to drive. The
only mods to the suspension I ever did on the '88 was KYB dampers and SAS
poly bushings on the front sway-bars so that may have much to do with the
better handling. I plan eventually on getting new springs for the NG900,
but for now it does just fine.

If you do go for the NG900 avoid the '94-'95's. Lots of problems with the
first couple of model years with these cars. And don't touch the V6 -- it
was a pig and the timing belts tended to break about 30,000 miles before
the recommended service period! (Flames if you like, just my personal
opinion...)

Though I've never owned a 9000, I have driven loaners and have ridden in
the back seat a couple of times. The car really is a limosine. Plenty of
room. Can't really comment on the cargo capacity but I expect it to be
quite cavernous. I never particularly liked the 9000's styling compared to
the OG900, but, in Aero trim, it is a rocket. My NG900 is too, in
Talladega trim with a Saab Sport Exhaust (though certainly not a Viggen).

I guess bottom line is test drive both -- and make sure your wife does too
if her sense of creature comfort is important to you both.

Good luck with your decision and Happy Saabing!

Regards,
Jim Miller
