One possible source of an automatic transmission whine is the 'oil pump'.
It will make a whine that is related to engine speed, and is a 'sharp'
sounding whine, as distinguished from the usual 1st gear whine - it is also
lower in pitch, and of course, will not go away when the tranny shifts out
of first.  The oil pump is not terribly expensive, and in can be replaced
without disassembling the transmission.  You do have to R&R the tranny,
though, so rebuilding the tranny in the mean time might be a good idea.
But I digress - there are tales of people driving a long time with the oil
pump whining, and also tales of people quieting the pump down by adding
transmission stuff to the oil.  The latter are in the 'if it's gonna go
soon anyway, it can't hurt to try' category of automotive maintenance
avoidance.  But who knows, it might work.
