Spiders and Joints

I am in the midst of replacing the engine/transmission in my 84 SAAB. The
new/rebuily engine is now bolted in but in the process of re-fitting the
passenger's side drive shaft one of the bearings on the inner universal
joint (spider bearing???) fell off - scattering the needles and the races
on the ground. I managed to locate all of the needle bearings and refit
them ( with the help of a magnet).

Unfortunately two things happened in the process of rebuilding the bearing
a) there are now more 'needles' than will fit in the bearing (approx. 8 or
so) - does this mean: i) they came from another bearing? ii) were leftover
from a previous R and R? iii) somehow fit into the bearing that fell off?

Second, the inner and outer races seem to simply slide on top of the
needles when they are packed into the bearing. Is this suppose to be a
'pressure' fit or are the needles/bearing kept in place once inside
the inner driver by the races?

I have checked both Bentley and Haynes and both warn against the
possibility of dropped needles and suggest that they can be repacked and
held together with grease. Should I replace the bearing as a matter of
course? If so do I need to buy the whole shaft or can I buy individual
bearings?

Thanks for your help.
