Fuel Gauge Bias

The recent postings on sticking fuel gauges prompt me to ask the
following:

On my 91 900, the fuel gauge seems to be biased downward, so that the
needle never really points to the F after I fill the tank, and gets to E
(without the warning light being lit) with 4 or more gallons left in the
tank (I rarely add more than 12 or 13 gallons, and IIRC the capacity is
around 18). Fortunately, my trip odo still works, and I reset it each
time I fill up (before starting to move), so I have a pretty good idea
of when fuel really is needed.

Is there a fix for this condition? If so, it would have to be
relatively simple for me to actually do something. I've gotten used to
this over the past 10 years -- but it sometimes disconcerts my passenger
to see the gauge pointing at E at 1:00 a.m. in the middle of nowhere.
