SRS Issues

Since I have had my 1993 9000 (new), I've had my share of SRS related
problems. About every 1.5 years or so, on the average, a fault in the SRS
system occurs, which manifest themselves as the SRS light illuminating.
The faults have been:

1. 'loose' harness wiring
2. Bad electrical contact on the SRS box itself
3. Malfunctioned SRS box - replaced under warranty

The first two faults have occured before and after the SRS box has been
replaced. Recently, the car was in the garage for this and other problems
(described later) and the diagnosis was: intermittant open in the cable to
the LHS crash sensor, as reported by the ISAT unitl. The book correction
is to replace the cable (a $270 part, plus roughly $200 labor). I asked
'why cant the existing cable be troubleshot and repaired' and the answer
was - because of liability reasons dealing with the air bag system, the
parts cannot be repaired, only replaced.' Does anyone know it this is
REALLY the case? I elected not to have the service work done....dealer
reset the SRS unit, and I will see what happens...probably repair it myself
in the spring. A related question: Has anyone else had reoccuring
problems with their SRS system and what were the 'final' cures...I am
getting tired of dealing with this apparently unstable arrangement. Anyone
have a schematic of the SRS box? or the detailed wiring schematic?

Problem number two. Sepentine belt failure. Car has 55K miles on it.
During the past 1.5 years I have had the following failures:
1. Idler pully frozen - replace pulley and belt
2. about 2 months later - tensioner faulty - replace tensioner and belt
3. recently - belt missing a rib the whole way around. diagnsis: camshaft
pulley wobbly, replace pulley and belt (again).
So: What else could fail in this system? Any suggestions as to why the
components are falling like dominos? I would think the system has too much
tension in it, Is there a way to correct this - eventhough the 'automatic
tensioner' is suppoes to do this? OR is this another infamous saab design
that when the tensioner fails, as in my case, that it actually puts MORE
tension in the system, thereby damaging all the other components?????
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.....

Sincerely
John Hudak
