>>I switched an 84M900T with 110,000 miles to synthetic about 2 years ago
(engine, tranny and power steering). No problems. I switched My 91
Rodeo with ~150,000 miles at the same time. The next day the Rodeo
dumped the entire PS fluid (engine & tranny have been fine), and
switching back to regular PS fluid has not fixed it...time for a
rebuild.<<

I don't think that this fluid dump came about as a result of swollen
seals. A swollen seal would suppress a leak. Rather, I suspect it
happened because all the silt that had been clogging the system and
plugging leaks was swept up into the new fluid by its improved detergent
abilities. Uh-oh. Now the leaks were exposed.
The same thing happened to me on a 1967 Ford with an MX transmission.
Though the ATF was brown, mechanics warned me against changing it. Idiot
that I am, I changed the fluid anyway. Soon after, my problems started.
Not with leaks, but with the trans's reluctance to shift out of low until
it had warmed up. Sometimes this took several miles. A 390 sounds pretty
impressive going down the interstate in low. In an old transmission, silt
is your friend. Eventually, though, a rebuild becomes mandatory.
Like you, I would not worry about mixing oil and synthetic lubricants,
unless the manufacturer of the lubricant or the vehicle specifically
warned against it.
