I am also doing a lot of work on a 1971 96. I just barely removed the gas tank. The steps are:
1. Drain it using the drain plug on the bottom. (a little behind the axle)
2. Take out the rear seat and remove the tank shield screws (2).
3. Remove the fuel tank level sending wires and the body ground wire. (I
would mark where the wires go for the sending wires)
4. Remove the fuel line. You can reach the bolt through the left hand hole
easiest.
5. Disconnect the two securing straps. There are two wingnuts, one in each of
one of the cutout holes.
6. Jack up the rear of the vehicle securely and under the rear wing, unscrew
the clips on the vent and filler tubes. Make sure dirt does not enter the
open tank/bent tube.(This is not critical if you are getting it cleaned.)
7. Raise the right side of the tank and raise it an upwards direction to the
rear of the vehicle.
When you put the tank back, make sure that the filler tube and vent pipes are
not kined or hindered by the rubber grommet.

Are you doing anything else on your 96? If so, we should confer because I am
trying to restore mine, and we might have tips for eachother.
Glad to help
