Unfortunately the 2.3l non-turbo engine in the NG900s
do tend to have a higher timing and balance shaft
chain failure rate than its turbo brethren. This is
especially true if rigorous (every 3k mile) oil change
intervals have not been followed.

If you do not get this fixed then at some point one of
the chains will break and cause havoc in your engine.
These are interference engines. That being said, four
thousand dollars does seem high. I have had two
different timing/balance chainectomys done on Saabs
I've owned and the cost was around $3,000 for each job
including a new head gasket.

Once the job is done I'd recommend only using high
viscosity synthetic oil in your car. Synthetic oil
will prevent a lot of these problems and is cheap
insurance compared to what you are facing.

Good luck!

- Chad
