Saab was originally SAAB an acronym for Svenska Aeroplan
Akitebolaget, or Swedish Aircraft Company. It was a state-owned
company that manufactured aircraft under license for the Swedish Air
Force.

SAAB decided to start making cars in 1947 when they realized they
would need some revenues from things other than military weapons.

After many years, they changed to simply 'SAAB' and later 'Saab' (it
makes a difference...).

After turning the company private, the new owners - the Wallenbergs -
merged SAAB with Scania, a truck making company in Sweden.
SAAB-Scania lived on until 1989/1990 when the Wallenbergs (Investor
AB) sold a 50% interest in Saab Cars to General Motors. Earlier this
year, GM took the option to purchase the second half of Saab Cars AB.

The Blue roundel you see on Saabs from 1985 through 2000 was the
symbol for Saab Scania. The Griffin head is the symbol for the Skåne
province of Sweden, from where Scania gets its name. The interlocking
circles indicated the ways that the various divisions of Saab Scania
worked together on technologies.

For the 2001 model year, and since August 14, 2000, the new logo is a
larger Griffin head of the same design on a blue field with 'SAAB' in
silver letters below, all enclosed in a silver circle.
