There was a fourth car, I vaguely recall being the Chroma. Wasn't the
Chroma the Fiat, and the Thema the Lancia?

I don't know for sure about the safety aspect. There is more to safety
than just the platform. However, I do recall that there was a lot of flak
directed at the 164 by the 'true believer' Alfisti, sneering that it was
'just a Saab' (my paraphrase, but you get the idea), not worthy to the
marque, etc. Pretty much the same thing one heard with the VW Rabbit/Golf
vs. Beetle, Porsche 928 vs. 911, BMW 3 Series vs. 2002, and even 9000 vs.
900, so it all sounds very familiar....

Too bad that (as one wag put it), it looked like a crash test car that had
already been tested when brand new:-)....
