Cold Start Noises

My 88 900T with 225k on the odo has recently begun to make clattering =
noises just after the car is started. This only occurs on cold mornings =
after the car has not been driven for 24 hours. The noise lasts about =
5-20 seconds depending on temperature. The head has never been off this =
car, and I know that the chain is original. About 3,000 miles ago, I had =
my Saab mechanic visually inspect the chain and tensioner. He said that =
it was fine and did not show excessive wear. Could this be valve noise? =
Or is it an early indication of timing chain wear? Is there a way to =
diagnose without removing anything? I listened with a long screwer =
driver with the head resting on the valve cover closest to the =
windshield and the butt-end on my ear. The noise seemed more prominent =
at that end, then on the opposite end near the distributor.

Any advice would be appreciated.
