With regard to the '96 with the misfire condition....Misfire can be caused
by the fuel system (injectors, wiring, etc.) as well as by the ignition
system. Particularly in light of the comment about a 'burned spark plug'
(meaning electrodes eroded, or eaten away?) which suggests a lean
condition, the fuel system should be checked (OK, in dealer lingo that
means 'replace more parts'). Also possible, but a longer shot, is a valve
lifter or other valve actuation problem fouling up air or fuel deliver to
the #4 cylinder, although I'm not sure how that could result in
preignition, but it certainly could cause a misfire which would be detected
by the diagnostics.
