Re: Replacing O2 Sensor

Well, okay, here is some general advice based on my experience with
classic 900 turbos, which may or may not apply to your 9000. Check your
maintenance log: is the sensor due for a replacement? Keep in mind that
the sensor can be damaged by an 'antifreeze shower' or excessive oiling,
so if you've blown a head gasket or had other major engine problems
recently the sensor may have died before it's time. If you do have to
replace the sensor, invest in an oxygen sensor socket: even if you only
replace one O2 sensor the socket will pay for itself by eliminating hand
damage and hassle. The O2 sensor is probably at least partially seized
and using crescent or open-end wrenches to remove the sensor is risky at
best. Slather the threads of the new sensor with anti seize to help
prevent this next time.

Here are some diagnostic tricks. Have A DVM? Slap it across the sensor
with the engine warm and running and see if the sensor is working.
Should hover around .5-1 volt. If your car has a full throttle
enrichment switch, find it and use a rubber band or tie wrap to
temporarily close the switch and see if that clears up the problem. This
effectively takes the lambda system out of the loop. If the rough
running doesn't clear up when you do this, you've got other problems...
