Flywheel Replacement & Cracked Head

My girlfriend's 1987 90 000 Miles 9000T is in mint condition -nice car, =
leather and all options. It has some leak - I think it may be coolant, =
it looks oily, but the engine and gearbox oil are at top level all the =
time - it burns absolutely no oil.

Anyway, a week ago, she saw a thick white smoke which disappeared as the =
engine warmed up. The very same day, she couldn't start the engine. She =
towed the car to a mechanic who said it was necessary to change the =
starter (350 $) before he could even see if the flywheel was good and =
what that white smoke was about.=20

Actually, that mechanic was either incompetent or a crook, because she =
didn't accept the bill and took the car to a friend where we saw that =
the starter was absolutely OK, but the flywheel crown was loose ! Yes, =
it was depressed and spinned around the flywheel. I had to leave for =
France, but I'll go back in one week. My girlfriend lives in Washington =
DC and has no place to keep a broken car. Can anyone give me an opinion =
on the following:

1. Is it difficult to change the flywheel? How much would it cost to =
have it done by a honest mechanic?
2. If the head is cracked, is it expensive to change it? (the engine =
oil has no coolant trace, but I suppose the white smoke must be either a =
blown head seal or a cracked head.
3. Is it worth doing the whole job? (the mechanic has offered her 100 =
$ for the car so she can buy a new one :). She's rather fond of the car, =
but the job seems to be quite expensive...

Thank you in advance.

Dan
