9-5 Surge Sputters Stalls

I have a 1999 9-5 Wagon with what I hope is a straightforward
problem. Perhaps someone with more experience with engines (and
finding such a person wouldn't be too hard) can provide a clue.
Through 55,000 miles, this is the first problem I've had with
the engine.

While cruising along at freeway speed, the RPM sometimes surges,
and sometimes backs off. While at a stop sign/stop light,
regardless of whether it is in drive or neutral, the engine
sometimes stalls. This happens whether or not the AC is
cranking. The problem is intermittent.

I took it to the dealer 2 weeks ago. They said they replaced the
EC (electronic control?) unit and plugs. Problem resurfaced a
day later, and then went away, only to return today with a
vengeance -- 5 stalls alone to and fro the office.

Interestingly, Saab was nice enough to cover the problem as a
warranty repair even though the car is slightly out of warranty.
Otherwise it would have been $600. Well, two weeks later, and
with the problem recurring, I'm glad I didn't have to fork over
the cash for a problem that wasn't fixed the first time.
(Methinks they just slapped this unit under the hood and assumed
the problem was fixed.)

I am bringing the car back in on Thursday. If anyone has any
ideas in advance, I'd be a grateful fellow owner.
