Starter Harness

In the process of doing Townsend's reverse engagement transmission mod on
my '84 900 (with my officially-nonexistent GM45608 transmission), I had
occasion to look at my starter and associated wiring for the first time
in a while, and was rather disturbed at what I found:

All of the insulation on the starter harness is *badly* cracked from
heat, to the point where flexing it during deinstallation caused the
remaining insulation to flake off in a nasty-tasting little cloud. I
cracked the rigid-but-intact black outer sheathing off of the bundle for
the first couple of feet, and the individual wire insulation flaked off
for a good portion of that as well. (Basically, everything in close
proximity to the exhaust downpipe.)

I'd rather not lose my SAAB in a fireball (the fat starter-alternator
cable is unfused, so far as I know), but I'd also rather repair than
replace, so I'm wondering:

1) Is there a better way than heatshrink (probably over a smoothing layer
of electrical tape) to re-insulate the cable?
2) Am I being an idiot to want to repair this over replacing the whole mess?
3) Is there a good insulative outer wrap to use to minimize this sort of
hazard recurring? It seems weird that the local auto parts emporia
don't have anything useful for this, since I would guess that it's a
common problem. (Possibly, though, it's that I'm dealing with the
less-than-the-brightest weekend counter staff.)

thanks for any enlightenment,
andrew
