Depends on the year. If you see a black plastic block in the back of
the alt, and only two wires going to the alternator, then it's
internal. If you see a block with 4 wires coming out of it, that's an
external regulator

There are two wires on the back of the internally regulated
alternators. One is the big wire that is held on with a nut, and that
carries the charging current. The smaller one is the exciter for the
field, and that one is a slip-on connection. If that one is broke,
then the alternator can exhibit symptoms like these.

Oh, wait, there is (or may be, I forget on the 99) a third wire that
connects the case of the alternator to the block to ground the
circuit. I know this is on 900s, it may not be on 99s, as the 99
alternator is not supported in rubber bushings.

No, but then most of us would find it easier to just get a rebuilt of
a junkyard alternator.
