Buying a Used Saab

Hi folks -- New Guy here. I'm a DIY'er Ford Taurus SHO owner who's always
been keen on the Saab 900's lines, and have an opportunity to buy an 82
900 Turbo for $450. This car has 99K miles, and is in overall decent
condition.

The god news is the mileage, and that the car does run. The bad news is
that it doesn't run under its own power. It starts and runs perfectly
when gasoline is sprayed into the intake, so it must be a fuel delivery
problem. The owner says the last time it was running was April 2000.
Until then, it ran perfectly and was driven regularly.

That said, the seller also offered to spend a Saturday afternoon trying to
sort this problem out. I'm going to hunt for a Haynes manual for the car
this weekend.

Other weak spots: minor rust-through on the front wheel wells, a bit on
the passenger's side of the hood, and some surface rust under the trunk
lip. The head liner could use a little TLC, and the sunroof's liner is
missing. There may also be an exhaust leak behind the cat; it sounded a
little loud at idle, but the pipe looked good at the back of the car.

The turbo gauge showed some boost at idle -- I never revved past 2K or so,
so I'm not sure what kind of range of motion to expect out of the boost
needle.

Any advice on this car would be greatly appreciated. My Taurus list
(www.shotimes.com) has moved me from 'won't touch anything under the
hood' to 'guy with a garage full of tools.' (The SHO is a VERY
expensive car to maintain if you're paying Ford shop rates) It seems, at
first glance, that this is another very helpful list too!

Hope to hear from some of you soon.

Thanks in advance!
