Airbag Deployment

The airbag generally should not deploy in a rear end collision, because
you are being slammed backward, into the seat, rather than forward into
the steering wheel. If the airbag went off, it would only increase the
chance for broken fingers and other injuries that airbags sometimes
cause. You are lucky that you were driving a Saab, though, because they
are engineered to reduce the chance of whiplash. This is one of the
most common types of injuries in rear end collisions, and I have known a
number of people who sustained neck injuries in car accidents who will
be dealing with neck or back pain for the rest of their life.
