9-5 Aero Impressions

My wife & I picked up two 2000 Aero's (w/manual transmissions, of =
course) in mid December and, after stress-testing them between MD-FL =
(we're at about 5500 miles each) have nothing but great things to say! =
What a hoot to drive, particularly after having been reduced to =
rice-burners in northern Japan for the past three years. We thought our =
old '94 9000 Super CSE was a great & impressive car, but these are much =
mo' betta. Ride's a bit stiffer (sport chassis), handles like a cat and =
will absolutely scream as necessary. Smooth & refined, power out the =
wazzoo when needed. The manual transmission Aero's have 20 seconds of =
overboost when you stand on it in 3/4/5 gear that jacks the power up =
over the rated 230hp - makes accelerating from 80mph to pass a breeze. =
They'll scoot up to three digit speeds with ease. I won't admit to the =
stability & slipperiness of the cars at 145mph, though (but, man, they =
sure are!). True, the interior's just a tad bit smaller, but that's =
negligible. My only semi-gripe is the lack of adjust on the seatbelt =
height - tends to ride up a little on my neck, but that's been mentioned =
before. 'W' rated radials (no screeching when heavy cornering) keep it =
glued to the ground. Only problem noted to date was the radio unit in =
my car died mysteriously and the replacement radio CD will periodically =
not play (error 10), or it'll play for a bit then *piff* quit and error =
10 or it'll be just fine. Maybe it doesn't like my taste in music? A =
minor annoyance that I'll get traded out when I get bored. They're both =
eye-catching and conversation starters. We like the standard wheels =
(some folks don't) and find them to give the cars an aggressive =
machine-that-can-come-to-life look. Removed all external markings =
(except Aero side badge and rear roundel), mounted a CB radio - don't =
laugh - a Beartracker II police scanner and a Valentine One RADAR/LASER =
detector in each car (reasonable & prudent speed - we're lifetime family =
members of the NMA), deleted the DRL (hate 'em) and the =
must-depress-clutch-to-start switch. Added rear deck spoilers, window =
tint and rear mudflaps (front mudflaps will NOT mount on Aero due to =
airflow side molding). Having been in Saabs since 1986, we're still =
hooked and will continue to be as long as they keep turning out machines =
like these (and GM doesn't screw 'em up). Here's the kicker: paid 34K =
apiece (delivered) through the IDS program. Bottom line: magnificent =
automobiles! If ya see us on I-95 (she's in Pensacola, FL, until June =
and I'm in Crofton, MD, setting up house and we have our secret =
rendezvous just north of Savannah, GA), flash yer headlights or find us =
on channel 19; we can stop, have coffee (who needs cupholders?) and =
chat.
