Changing Brake Pads

I'm doing my first-ever front pad change on my '83 900.

I bought a tool from Lisle (who do a lot of brake things) which resembles a
little brass cube; it has different 'little thingies' on each of its surfaces
that mate with a different kind of piston indent.

My problem: this cube is far, far fatter than the space that exists between
the rotor and the piston.

I don't know if there are any tricks (!! hence this mail!!) but if not, I
wonder if the better bet would be to see if I can't find a flatter tool (like
the one shown in the Bentley repair manual) or whether it would be faster to
just take off the caliper and do it that way with the existing tool.

Thanks.

B.
