Check Engine

Last week my 1987 9000 Turbo went down, white smoke went heavily out of the
exhaust. I live in Lebanon, its difficult to find parts and the dealers
prices are way to high.
I had to replace the turbo by a newer (used) Garret model, it fitted
perfectly yet some hoses had to be adjusted.
The problem is, when the repairs were done, black smoke went out of the
exhaust, idle not steady and no power at all. The turbo seems to be running
though. The check engine light has come up too. There was a wire from the
airflow meter plug disconnected I dont know why that we re-connected.
My mechanic claims it's the airflow meter and/or oxygen sensor. The car did
not have such problem prior to replacing the Turbo unit. I'm a bit lost and
don't want to start spending money here and there without getting results.
All your help is appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
