Pardon the lateness of this (non) reply, but it got lost.

Thanks for the input on the solid/vented rotor problem I mentioned (some
time ago). Several people wrote me about it.
The input was that I had solid rotors, and that I could switch to vented as
long as I was getting both the matching rotors and calipers.
So, I picked up new solid rotors and calipers and had them installed by my
BIL. I didn't go with the vented rotors because of late info, availability,
and cost (on a 16 yr old car).
I ended up paying US$99/ea for rebuilt 'loaded' calipers, and US$52/ea for
rotors.
The part I found interesting is the definition of 'loaded'. I went for the
complete kit, including all pins, springs, etc. Someone else mentioned having
to chase down various fiddly-bits when doing the rebuild yourself.
In addition, apparently getting the pads with the calipers is also optional;
this surprised me.
From what I gather, different auto parts chains have a different definition
of what 'loaded' means. I would have thought it meant a 'bolt-on'
replacement, with all the pieces-parts installed or part of the kit; from
what others tell me, this is not so.
By calling around and asking, I got the calipers with all the fiddly bits
installed; someone wrote me and in the ensuing back&forth mentioned that he
had to chase around to 2 or 3 different places to get all the fiddly bits to
fit.
In addition, the point about differing qualities of pads also came up.
The critique was that by getting the calipers completely.... well...
complete, I was getting whatever quality pads the mfr was using that week.
That wasn't a big issue to me, since I don't do any hi-po driving anymore,
and they're OK for a daily driver.

Just some random thoughts about the job.

So... as usual, Caveat Emptor.
