Gear Indicator Light

The gear indicator light on my 1996 900SE went out. I figured that the bulb
had died and told my dealer when the car went in for service. He said there's
no juice reaching the socket and that his mechanics spent an hour or two
tracing the circuit to see what was wrong. But the light near it, on the
winter-mode button, works fine. Any reason the gear-indicator socket could
not be wired to the same source as the winter-mode light?
