Rajeev:

My suspicion is that the ignition switch is going. The last set of
symptoms is identical to that obtained when the ignition switch is
placed in the 'Test' position; this position is located between the
'START' and 'RUN' positions. It is normal for all instruments to come
on and for the speedometer and other analog gauges to drop to zero when
the ignition switch is moved to that position, and yes, the car keeps
running.

The car stalling might be tied to the same cause. This might also be
tied to the 'Check Engine' condition you mentioned.

Note that the switch can be replaced without replacing the key lock;
this way the one key system you have remains undisturbed.

Soda and other liquids containing sugar wreck havoc with the ignition
switch due to its unique SAAB-exclusive location on the 900.

I recommend a new SAAB switch versus a junkyard special. It just isn't
worth the savings.
