Brake Calipers

I just had my 3rd set of front brake calipers put onto my '86 900S. The
story I got from my mechanic is that the design is the problem. Every time
he tries to turn back the piston to replace the pads, or rotors, the piston
seal busts and a new set of calipers are needed. I didn't/don't have this
problem with our '88 900 or '91 9000, with the later design. Is this a
common problem with the older deign calipers, or should I be looking for a
new brake mechanic? Also, while I'm thinking about it, how does everyone
else tell when their pads need to be replaced. With the common squeaking of
the semimetalics, I just do a visual check when I rotate the tires. Is
there a better way, i.e. specific sound or feel difference?

Thanks,
Ed Wardell
