Re: Toll Transponder - EZ-Pass

Got almost 20 responses to my query on whether an EZ-Pass transponder
will work OK if mounted on the windshield of a 1994 9000 CSE. Thanks
to all who responded.

Many of the responses actually were on people's experiences with
transponders on 900s. The consensus is that there's no problem with
the classic 900, and the official instructions say the windshield tag
is OK for it. Some people even report that the tag works even if
it's on the dash or even on the seat.

Three people reported on 1995 900 NG Saabs; all of them had no
problem with the windshield tag. One person with a 1998 obtained the
license plate-mount tag because the instruction said so. A driver
who will remain nameless says that kind of tag actually reads sooner
so you can pass through the tollbooth faster.

Experiences with 9000s were mixed. A 1996 Aero driver got the
external from the start (that's what the instructions say: 1995 and
later should use the external). A 1993 9KT driver reported he had
occasional misreads with the windshield tag, so he switched to the
external. Two people with 9000s have no problems with the windshield
tag; they mounted it in the center behind the mirror and below the
opaque strip on the top of the windshield (it has four little lines
at the edge).

Not enough data on the 9-5 and 9-3 to draw any conclusions.

My guess as for the 9000 is that the toll agencies probably err on
the side of caution in saying what cars the regular tag will work
with. It sounds like it's OK in the 9000, but you have less room for
error.

From my knowledge of RF electronics, and what the instructions say
about the problem, I presume that windshields with metallized layers
(certain self-clearing windshields, for example) block the 900 MHz
signals (I have some understanding of a Faraday cage). I don't know
what the coating at the top of a 9000 windshield is made of, but I
would make sure the tag is below it.

Thanks again, everyone.
