Idler

A few weeks ago whilst driving my 9-3 at about 100km/hr I heard some =
strange loud noises, at the same time the steering wheel became very =
stiff and the battery light in the dashboard came on. Within seconds the =
temperature gauge went to the red zone and the 'coolant fluid low' =
message also came on as well. Luckily, traffic was light giving me the =
chance to park safely. It turned out that the main v-belt was severely =
damaged and it had come out of its position. After inspection by the =
Saab dealer I was informed that the idle pulley (Idler) on which the =
main v-belt runs got stuck which resulted in the belt getting too hot =
and eventually giving way. I do realize that things can and do go wrong, =
but what worries me is that the same incident happened to me whilst =
driving my 900 '95 around 18 months ago (at that time it did 60K km). =
Even worse, I had to pay now for the idler, belt and labour as these =
items are not included in the warranty.

I have the following questions: -
=B7 Is it true that these items are not covered during the warranty =
period?=20
=B7 Did any of you have the same problem?=20
=B7 If this pulley isn't that reliable, shouldn't Saab recommend its =
replacement along with, say, the 20K inspection?=20
=B7 Or is it just my bad luck with Saabs? I exchanged the 900 '95 at 60K =
km with 9-3 because its gearbox developed a major fault and its =
replacement would have cost me a fortune.

900 '86 2.0 5M 170k (RIP)
900 '95 2.3 4A 60k
9-3 '00 2.0t 4A 35k
