There is a limit to how far a hydraulic valve lifter can adjust, yours just
might be worn to the point they can't 'adjust' anymore. Also, the o-ring on
the valve depressor can crack with age. The O-ring can be replaced, but
you'll probably be pushed to buy new lifters. Replacing the O-ring is a
nontrivial job, so getting new lifters is probably a good idea if you don't
have good shade-tree skills.

Having said that...
US$1800, regardless of the current exchange rate, is outrageous.
Just a suggestion:
If your mileage hasn't dropped any, and you still have adequate power, and
still have good compression - turn up the music ;-).
