Turbo Engine Overheating

i just bought 97 900SE convertible with the 2.0 turbo engine.
on the way back from Pheonix (Arizona) to California, the engine
temperature got into red a few times and i had to slow down/stop.
didn't feel too good crawling up hills behind trucks while a Ford
Focus flies by... i was not even able to keep 70mph (speed limit
in AZ is 75 ;-).
for most ot the day, the temperator stayed in the top 10-25% of
the white area in the dial. i could observe the temperatur rising
as soon as i started to climb a bit.
yes, it was somewhat hot in the desert (around 105F/41C) and there were
moderate hills (most of them less than 2 miles long). but i wouldn't
expect it to lead to the engine overheating.

so my question is whether this is a common problem and whether
there are any simple things to check what might be causing this.
i secretly hope that it is just a shot temperatur sensor and not
an engine problem.

one thing i did realize is that the engine seems to prefer to
run with 3500-4000rpm in 3rd gear (it's an automatic) rather than
2000-3000 in 4th. the handbook suggests otherwise, but my guess is
that the turbo helps i bit (or torque is better, didn't check the
charts).

thanks in advance!
sorry for the lengthy posting, still worked up from the trip.
since this is the first time i own a Saab, i'll probably have
more postings ;-)

cheers,
Malte
