Erroneous Brake Light Out Indication

I had the same brakelight failure warning on my '95 SET drive me crazy.
I would get the warning at startup or when I backed out of the garage and
applied the brakes. I would check the brake lights (L, R & CTR) and they
would always be okay. One day, as I pulled out of my parking spot at work,
the warning light lit up and the chime sounded. Luckily, a colleague was
right behind me. Without taking my foot off the brake, I stuck my head out of
the window and yelled at him to check my brake lights- classy eh? Sure
enough, he told me that the center brake light was out. Upon removing the
hatchback lid trim (when I got home) , I found that the connector to the
center brake light was properly secured in its socket and the bulbs were
good. When I propped the brake pedal in the applied position, the center
light worked! As insurance, I used some small nylock ties to hold the plug in
it's socket even tighter. Everything was okay for awhile, but the warning
lights and chimes for brakelight failure began to reappear. Electrical
gemlins!
Long story short (almost too late for that now), I bought a new plug for
the center brake light at my local dealer. I installed the wires (2) and
attached terminal pins into the correct holes on the new plug (there are 3
holes)- problem solved. A note of advice, I was unable to release the
terminal pins from the old socket- they have barbs that secure them. Using a
'hot knife' attachment for a soldering gun, I cut open the old socket and
removed the wires undamaged.
My best guess as to the cause of this was vibration and temperature
change would cause intermittent contact with the brakelight terminals due to
a poor fitting plug. I hope your problem is as simple and cheap to fix!
