Balance Shaft Chain

I have a '96 900s. I've had a 'rattle' in the engine for a while which gets
louder the longer the car sits unused. A few months ago, I was told by one
group of mechanics that the sound was bearings in the water pump. When I
recently went in for my 65K service, I was told by the dealership mechanics
that the sound was a loose pulley in the balance shaft chain assembly which
would cost $4K to repair.

A. Has anyone out here experrienced anything like this?

B. Which sounds more likely?

C. Is $4K a lot for that job? Or can I find another mechanic (in Dallas)
who won't need as high a down-payment on a boat?
