Retorquing Head Bolts & Oil Pump

Scenario: 86 900 8v.

Just did a head gasket replacement.

The Elring gasket label said for torquing the head prior to '88 to do it in
three stages, and after '88 do it in 2 stages (with both having a further 90
turn). Does anyone know why there is this difference?

1000 mile retorque calls for backing off the head bolts 3/4 turn and
tetorquing to 65 lbs. Is this ok to do with the intake manifold and exhaust
gasket still bolted to the head?

I just did a head gasket replacement on an 1986;8 v nonturbo.  Oil
pressure light says oil pressure is ok. Changed oil after running car, and
the old oil filter was only half full when I removed it. Engine was giving
off a funny smell, and was untouchably hot after a highway stint.

When I had the head off, I didn't stop the cam  chain from 'relaxing'
into the tensioner area. My question is; is it possible for the cam chain to
have slipped off the oil pump connection somehow? (I wasn't able to get a 30
mm socket on the the pulley to replace the chain and tensioner - anyone have
any ideas what will fit on it?) If the chain;didn't slip off a cog (oil
pressure light is out indicating pressure) then the only other thing I can
think of it that one of the holes on head may still be covered with tape when
I was cleaning it preventing oil from flowing. Any thoughts
appreciated.

Thanks!

Peter
