Re: Shift Up Light

The most effective way to kill the shift-up light is to pull the
fuse.

However, after living with the light for many thousand miles, I have
to ask, 'Why?'.

In the old days you didn't want to run the engine at wide throttle and
low revs because the carburetion would run rich and you'd risk
excessive deposits. Moreover, the engines were tuned to develop
better torque at 3000 rather than the lower revs used now.

With modern engines and their fuel injection, the mixture is spot on
throughout the rev/throttle position range and low revs no longer
presents problems with deposits. Moreover, high-torque at low revs
has been proven* to lead to longer engine life as well as better fuel
efficiency. The result is that obeying the shift-up light is greener
for the environment, makes your Saab last longer, and costs you less
money.

Don't forget, too, that if you are enjoying yourself by using the
throttle freely, the shift-up logic notes that and does not come on.

So, in net, if the shift-up comes on, you're not using the throttle to
to have fun, so you're just puttering. If so, you might as well save
gas and money by shifting when the light comes on. On the other hand,
if you're going for it, you won't see the shift-up light.

*I'm sorry, I don't have references. I do remember that BMW 'e series
cars were designed around research that demonstrated the low-rev/high
efficiency concept.
