Re: Trailer Hitches

Some data points to think about:

I have a 'Da'Lan' aftermarket 1-1/4' square receiver hitch (from the local
U-Haul dealer) on a 91 turbo convertible. I chose it over the Saab hitch in
order to mount a standard receiver bike rack... It bolted on perfectly,
appears very strongly made, and doesn't seem to be getting damaged from
dragging on the pavement when I turn into parking lots (wish it didn't
stick down and back quite so far).

The few times I have tried to pull an actual trailer with it have been
interesting. No shortage of power, braking, or handling, but a definite
shortage of traction when climbing hills with loose gravel or rock on them!
The front wheels spin and spray loose rocks all over while forward progress
grinds to a halt, whether I try to tiptoe carefully or blast my way up with
more throttle.

The Saab is also very sensitive to what I suspect is unbalanced wheels on
the trailer. Behind a big van it seems to pull smoothly, but behind the
Saab you feel a constant vibration, and the gearshift knob spins a
disconcerting circle around its normal position.
