I had similar noises on our '87 900s. Only after it sat overnight, and
more noticeable on colder mornings. I changed my oil filter, and it solved
the problem. I thought that the 'NAPA Gold' filter that I had last
purchased was supposed to have a superior anti-drain back valve in it, but
the AC filter I put in its place cured the 'morning clatter'. You might
want to try a Saab filter, or other good brand. This is one reason that I
don't use Fram filters any longer. It has a poor check valve in it, that
just doesn't hold up between changes. Additionally, you might want to try
a lighter weight oil for these colder months. The lighter viscosity gets
pumped faster into the gallies/bearings/lifters.
