Gas Boycott

Saab and a few other manufacturers have provided 'realtime' gas consumption
displays as part of their normal instrumentation. Use this to increase
your MPG.

Having driven pickup trucks for 20 years, getting into my new to me 1996
900S last year was a revelation watching the distance to empty GO UP as my
speed decreased to near the posted limit. Of course the DTE would
eventually top out and then decline but on trips and even commuting I try
to 'play' the 'increase DTE game'. What this has done is smooth out my
driving, reduce the wear and tear on the whole car especially the brakes
and I get to my destination just a little bit later (commuting) or I enjoy
the drive more (I do put 35,000 kilometers per year on the car).

So yes, boycotting only defers the fillups and unless driving habits
change, overall consumption and costs will go up until there is no more gas
to pump.

So, try driving closer to the speed limit, without obstructing traffic, let
the SUVs and motorhomes go by with their 15MPG and pass them while they are
stopped at the gas station. You will not convert those who do not want to
listen so do your own thing and have more enjoyment doing it.

I know driving slower is not what owning a Saab is all about so
occasionally it doesn't hurt to go a little bit quicker in the twisty bits
where overall speed isn't the criteria - right?

Regards

Dennis
