Though they sound insurmountable, the problems you describe really aren't
in my opinion. I had my 900S for 305,000 miles before I sold it and I wish
I hadn't. I'd try to revive.

Other than the crank seal does it have any other obvious problems? Also,
the upper end screeching, sounds like pulleys to me at first. How long did
you continue to drive it when you first started noticing the smoke? You
may try to revive the engine in it just to see, but if you did do serious
damage, then replace with another. How does the body look? Suspension?
Trashing the entire car for a bad engine seems a waste to me. (Mine was
rusting out ;_( )

Keep your old Saabs running!
