Reverse Thunk & Heat Valve

My name is John Haller, and I'm a relative newcomer to the Saab
family. I bought my '81 Saab 900s about two years ago for $40.00. It
wouldn't run, and the guy was just going to sell it to a junkyard. I
bought it, put in new spark plugs and have been driving it ever since. I
LOVE THIS CAR! It always starts, gets reasonably good gas mileage, and
rides and handles very nicely.
Here are some mechanical concerns; when backing up while applying
the brake, there is a loud THUNK from the right front area. Lately, I
think I've been hearing it from the left as well. I've had it up on the
rack, and all the suspension links and cv joints seem tight. Any ideas?
The little valve that controls the heat is broken in the hot position.
When I put in new speakers, I was able to reach in and manualy turn this
valve, reducing the heat somewhat, but it is still an anoyance to be hot
all the time. Plus, I can't fix the AC till this is taken care of. Is
there an easier way to replace this valve than taking out the entire
dash? Not looking forward to that. I see a post here about the little
rocker switch on the floor near the key. This switch does nothing that I
can tell. Is it supposed to turn on the dome light? My sunroof (moon
roof?) does not open, but does leak profusely. Any ideas?

John
