I drive a 1999 9-3 five door with the automatic transmission, and I don't
find that the engine is smothered, as you suggest. I find the acceleration
(especially in the Sport Mode) to be more than adequate. The shifts are
much smoother than any other car with an automatic that I've owned.
Occasionally, I have noticed that the transmission is in the wrong gear
and shifts abruptly, but that seems to be a relatively rare event, usually
caused by braking and accelerating in rapid succession.

I will freely admit that for a true motorhead, the five speed is the only
way to go, but I live in a big city and spend 90% of my drive time in
bumper-to-bumper traffic. Therefore, I made the pragmatic choice and
selected the auto. I don't think that anyone who is considering the 9-3
should shy away from the auto if that seems to be the logical choice given
his or her driving patterns.
